Services DoDEA Gifted Education standards guide the decisions
to be made for identified gifted students at Patch Elementary. Students
identified for gifted education services will be provided with an
appropriate match of services to their areas of strength. Our school's
Gifted Review Committee makes recommendations for services for each eligible
student. When the committee has completed recommendations for an eligible
student, the recommendations are presented for the approval of the
principal. With principal approval, the parents/guardians of the student
receive a letter indicating which services are available to the student.
With parental permission, the services begin for the student. Services are
provided on an ongoing basis unless the parent withdraws permission or the
committee seeks a re-evaluation.
Steps in the identification process
Screening: Information from available standardized test
scores, such as Terra Nova, is used to screen likely candidates for gifted
program services. Classroom performance with portfolios of student work, as
well as rating scales completed by parents, teachers, and students are
considered in the screening.
Nomination: Recommendations for services may come from
professional staff members, parents/guardians, or self-nomination. No
qualifying test scores are required for nomination.
Transfer Records: Students coming to Patch from another
DoDEA school are automatically found eligible for services if they were
eligible at their previous school. Students coming from a public or private
school outside of DoDEA are referred to the Gifted Review committee for a
determination of eligibility. Parents should provide information related to
gifted services the child received and the child's profile of strengths used
for identification at the previous school. |
