The Host Nation
Program at Patch Elementary emphasizes the history, culture and traditions
of Germany. Although the classes are not German language classes, basic
German words and phrases are learned during instruction. Taking under consideration
the varied student learning levels, classes also introduce students to
the concepts of ethnic and racial differences, stereotyping, and developing
an open, positive attitude towards other cultures. The host nation teacher
presents a variety of materials and activities that focus on the rich German
culture in which the students are living. Working with the classroom teachers,
the host nation teacher plans and coordinates a variety of study trips
that enable the students to investigate and explore this new country in
which they are now living. Parents are encouraged to sign up as chaperones
for these study trips. To supplement the school program, parents are encouraged
to take their children to local cultural events. Materials on these events
are often prepared and sent home as part of the Host Nation Program. |
